Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

  1. How many greetings can a caller hear?

A: Up to three can be played in the following order:

    1. Custom Greeting (computer read, requires Voicemail Enhanced or Unified Messaging)
    2. Name and Status Greeting (A mailbox greeting with your name and status, or just the name if status is "Available")
    3. Recorded Greeting (plays back a message you have recorded in your own voice)

These greeting are usually followed by the system leave a message prompt.

If you have not added a Custom Greeting via the web interface, when callers reach your mailbox they will hear the name (or number), then your status (if not available), then your recorded greeting (if recorded and active) then "please leave a message after the tone....".

The Name and Status Greeting is also called the Status Greeting or Status Confirmation Greeting when it is played to callers. (There are similar greetings played when you login to retrieve your messages or manage your UniBears voicemail. When you login via the TUI the Name and Status Greeting is called the Mailbox Confirmation Greeting. This greeting is phrased differently, but contains the same information.)

  2. Can I record a greeting in my own voice?

A: Yes. In UniBears, you can record a name and a greeting in your own voice. Via the UniBears telephone user interface enter the command 5 4 1 to record your greeting or 5 4 5 to record your name.

  3. Must I record a name and greeting?

A: You do not have to record a name or a greeting. By default if you do not record a name, the system will speak the name associated with the mailbox (in the UniBears database) in a synthesized voice.

  4. Can I turn the Name and Status Greeting off and on?

A: Yes. To turn the Name and Status greeting for your callers off and on: login to the telephone user interface and enter the phone command 5 5 4 5; or login to the web interface, unclick or click Play my mailbox name and status when callers reach my Voicemail under Options > Telephone Interface , then press the save button at the bottom of the page.

To turn the Name and Status off and on for when you login to UniBears: login to the telephone user interface and enter the phone command 5 5 4 4; or login to the web interface, unclick or click Play my mailbox name and status when I login to Voicemail under Options > Telephone Interface , then press the save button at the bottom of the page.

(The UniBears mailbox must be linked to your CalNetID for you to be able to use the web interface.)

  5. Can I turn the Recorded Greeting off and on?

A: Yes. Via the UniBears telephone user interface enter the command 5 4 9.

  6. How do I stop callers from hearing my name twice?

A: Callers will hear your name twice if you have recorded your name in the Name prompt and at the beginning of your recorded greeting, your Status is "available", and you have both the Name and Status Greeting and Recorded Greeting turned on to play back. You can solve this problem by only using one type of greeting or by not recording your name in the recorded greeting.

  7. How do I set up a vacation greeting?

Choose the type of greeting you want to use for your vacation greeting.

Method 1 - Status Confirmation Greeting: The simplest way to announce you are on vacation is to use the system Name and Status Greeting to announce that your are "on vacation". Just change your status to "on vacation". For how to do this see the instructions in My Status (via the phone) section of the on-line guide.

If you have turned off the playing of your status, you need to turn it back on via the phone interface (phone command: 5 5 4 5 1). If you have turned off the playing of this mailbox greeting via the web interface, you can also turn it back on via the web interface. See instructions for turning it off in Method 2 below and click instead unclicking the playback option.

Method 2 - Recorded Greeting: To have your own vacation greeting you can turn off the Mailbox Greeting and record a message:

    1. To turn off Mailbox Greeting, login to the telephone user interface and use the phone command 5 5 4 5 2; or login to the web interface, unclick Play my mailbox name and status when callers reach my Voicemail under Options > Telephone Interface , then press the save button at the bottom of the page.
    2. To record a greeting, login via the phone interface, press 5 4 1.

You can also configure an attendant operator number that will allow callers to press 0 to reach an attendant.

Method 3 - Custom Greeting: The Custom Greeting is a computer read (text-to-speech) greeting. If you have Voicemail Enhanced or Unified Messaging service you can also login via the web, select Rules (if necessary) then:
