Campus Phone Number

UniBears Voicemail, Unified Messaging, Unified Communication Add-on and Virtual Fax Add-on services are for the University of California Berkeley Campus and Richmond Field Station telephone system users. A 642-xxxx, 643-xxxx, 664-xxxx or 665-xxxx campus telephone system number is required for UniBears services.

A separate campus virtual fax telephone number will be assigned for receiving faxes via the Virtual Fax Add-on and Stand-alone services.

A touch-tone telephone (or cell-phone) is required for phone access to UniBears. A working message-waiting capable telephone, SMS capable cell phone, or pager is required to receive message notification via the telephone system.

For phone or web access to Unified Messaging and Virtual Fax - Add-on to work, messages must be on the mail server used by UniBears. For example, if UniBears is using CalMail to store messages and CalMail is set to forward messages off to a departmental mail server, there will be no messages in the CalMail mailbox to be found by the UniBears system.

Internet Access

A computer with internet access is required to set personal settings via the web and for email access to UniBears.

Computers connected to the campus network must meet minimum campus security requirements. More:

For information about connecting to UniBears via the Internet see:

Computer Headset or Speaker

Computer speaker(s) or a headset is required to listen to voicemail or videomail. A headset or headset with microphone is recommend for privacy and for use in multi-person offices.

An optional computer microphone or headset with microphone (and sound card, if not built-in) and audio recording software is required to create a .WAV file on a workstation. .WAV files in email messages cannot be played via phone access with the current version of UniBears. (IST-CNS has requested an enhancement to the software to do so in the future.)

Web Browser

A web browser (and internet access) is required to access the UniBears Web Access interface. A web browser may also be needed for web email access via the CalMail service. Some web browsers:

UniBears web interface access is available if you have a CalNetID and CNS can link the CalNetID to the UniBears account. At this time one CalNetID can only have one UniBears mailbox.

Email IMAP Service

CNS recommends using CalMail with IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) with the Unified Messaging service. Use of POP (Post Office Protocol) is not recommended for use with UniBears.

For UniBears to communicate with CalMail the email mailbox or user name used by UniBears must be the same as the CalMail user name (login name). An email alias mailbox name, for example "firstname.lastname" instead of "loginname" may not be used.

Email IMAP Client

An email client software capable of using Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is recommended to communicate with an email IMAP service. An alternative for connecting to CalMail is to use a web browser with the BearMail which uses IMAP to connect to CalMail. Some IMAP clients:

Accessing CalMail requires a secure connection:

Voicemail will appear as a .WAV ("WAVE" or Microsoft Resource Interchange File Format - Waveform Data) file attachment in most email client programs.

Fax Machine & Line

A separate fax machine or Computer with with fax modem and line, or separate online fax service is required to send faxes.

Virtual Fax requires Tag Image File Format (TIFF) display software to view incoming faxes. This software is already available on most workstations. More:

A fax machine or workstation printer may be required to print faxes. A workstation or networked printer is required to print incoming faxes when the incoming fax line is forwarded to UniBears to use the Fax Line Supplement service.
